Hi I am Joe Ng and I am a sports & wedding photographer based in Vancouver, Canada. I think I’m one of the oddballs in professional photography…
Unlike most of the working pros I’ve met, I’m among the few who came into this line of work from the corporate world. I spent 20 years holding roles in Multimedia Systems and Information Technology. During those years, photography was nothing more than a serious hobby, something that I enjoyed doing during my free time.
In college, I took many photography classes while studying electronic engineering, but was never able to take off with it as a career.
In the spring of 2010, I realized that I had exhausted the passion that I once had for my career in technology, so I made the jump to photography. I decided to leave the organization I worked for and pursue my dream of being a photojournalist.
Since then, I’ve been working as a freelance photographer based in Vancouver, Canada, with a focus on sporting events. Some of my other assignments include editorials and corporate events, as well as weddings which I capture using a photojournalistic style.
I am one of the official Fujifilm X Photographers and have been photographing exclusively with the Fujifilm X Series cameras and lenses since 2015.
I started out using the Fujifilm X100S in 2014 and switched completely to using Fujifilm exclusively when the Fujifilm X-T1 was released in 2015. I was invited to be one of the official Fujifilm X-Photographers in the same year.
My current favourite Fujifilm camera is X-T3. It comes with an extremely powerful processor and lightning fast AF focus with incredible image quality, even at very high ISO, which is important at the low light situations that I often cover.
All of this, the large electronic viewfinder and flip screen makes it perfect for all kinds of photography assignments.
Bodies:
FUJIFILM X-T3
This is my current favourite workhorse camera. I often shoot with 2 or 3 X-T3 cameras in my assignments.
FUJIFILM X-H1
Love the 5-axis IBIS and video capabilities. The slightly bigger body size improves hand holding with Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 telephoto lens. It is also my go-to run-and-gun video camera.
FUJIFILM X-T2
Yes, it is still in my bag. It was the first camera that I worked on as a beta tester for Fujifilm. It is still running strongly and never let me down.

Lenses:
The compact size, fast aperture and sharp image earned its place in my bag. I used to carry it in my MindShift Backlight backpack for outdoor assignments.
XF23mm f/2 R WR
It mounted on one of my X-T3 cameras permanently. It is my everyday walk around and candid setup.
XF56mm f/1.2 R
My favourite portrait lens, period.
XF80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro
Must-have item in my bag for wedding details shots.
XF90mm f/2 R LM WR
I love this for my wedding assignments especially at an indoor wedding reception. It is an extended arm for my XF56mm f/1.2 R.
XF10-24mm f/4 R OIS
I don’t think I’ve ever taken a bad picture with lens. Love the ultra wide-angle perspective, it just makes your pictures look better. BTW, with a powerful Optical Image Stabilization system, this lens makes a good video run-and-gun lens as well. The ability to work handheld when shooting in low light is boosted.
XF16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR
This was my workhorse lens for weddings, editorials and events. It also cover behind-the-scenes action before, during and after the event.
XF50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR
This is my workhorse lens and can be used for 60-70% of my work. It’s fast, sharp and the focal length is perfect if I need to get close but not too close.
XF200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR
This is my most recent lens addition to replace the XF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens. I gain 2-3 stops from the zoom lens. This lens is great for any indoor events like Rugby, Soccer or Hockey that cover a lot of physical ground in the fields. I can handhold this one but prefer a monopod after 30 minutes.
Flash:
Godox AD600Pro
My favourite lighting kit I ever used. I don’t have to worry about carrying long power cables and it can be setup in a minute at locations. I wish Godox would release a 1200w head by combining two Godox AD600Pro together.
Godox AD400Pro
The little brother of Godox AD600Pro. I enjoy shooting freely by having an assistant as VOL.
Godox V860II
I recycled lot of AA batteries after switched to this flash. Happy with the fast recycle time and not to mention li-ion battery.
Godox Xpro-F TTL Wireless Flash Trigger
The wireless trigger distance is amazing. From sideline to sideline at a football stadium.
Bag:
ThinkTank Airport International V3.0
It sucks up all my needed gears for my out of town assignments with great protection.
MindShift Backlight 26L Backpack
Just love the back-panel hatch providing access to all of my camera gear without taking the bag off. Great backpack for all my outdoors assignments.
