Helena La Petite

Hi there! I’m Helena, a food and travel photographer. I also publish Newfound, an online magazine on travel, food and culture stories with a focus on sustainability, nutrition and well-being. I’m also a big Pinterest lover and influencer. My home is Melbourne, though I’m always on the road.
I am drawn to natural, candid photos, which stems from my background in photojournalism and documentary photography.
I like to keep my gear simple for two reasons. First, it’s much easier when traveling. Second, I’m a small person, and having to carry my laptop as well as my current camera + lens isn’t something my body is very grateful for. Luckily you can get cheap massages in Asia, which is where I currently am. ;)
I use an older model MacBook Pro 15 inch, which I love, as I was able to upgrade the RAM and hard drive when I first got it.
In terms of photography, I shoot with a Canon 6D with an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. Again, my background in documentary photography influenced the decision of using a zoom lens. It keeps me flexible and allows me to shoot most things while I’m traveling.
Other than that, I sometimes take a Joby GorillaPod 3K with me.
Back home I also have a tripod and a simple light setup, which I hardly ever use (only if really necessary).
Even though I’ve been shooting on my Canon 6D and the 24-70mm for a few years now and love it, I’m looking to get an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II or Fujifilm X100F (as Mark reviewed in his ‘Best Travel Cameras’ guide).
I would love to downsize the weight of my gear and work towards my goal of only using carry-on luggage when traveling.
