Certainly, boudoir photography can be approached in various ways, and the choice of poses depends on the comfort level and preferences of both the photographer and the subject. There are so many more ideas. Go for it!

Comment on Sony a6600 Review by Eric https://shotkit.com/sony-a6600-review/#comment-198582 Tue, 12 Dec 2023 08:25:14 +0000 https://ausrust.johnnyvps.com/?p=60999#comment-198582 Great review that was well thought out. It was clear from the beginning that you loved the 6600, but you did an admiral job of describing the standout features and the benefits the camera provided. I thought you also did a good job in addressing some of the short comings of the camera. I love my Leica M, but alas, it does some things that frustrate me.

I recently upgraded from a 6300 (I also have a a7riii and a7rii). This is one of the rare reviews where a camera was praised for what in can do vs perceived flaws. What is even more appreciated is that the 6600 did not come across as a poor stepchild to the 6700. Well done and I look forward to reading more reviews from Shotkit.

1000 responders is a large sample. If you had 10,000 your results would be the same. The Science of Statistics.

Some of them are good as general guidelines, but all of them are conservative.

Comment on Butterfly Lighting: 13 Best Techniques, Examples & Setups by Jeff Collier https://shotkit.com/butterfly-lighting/#comment-198556 Mon, 11 Dec 2023 01:33:25 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=111584#comment-198556 In reply to Bruce.

You had me working on this one but here goes Bruce:

Clamshell Lighting:
Clamshell lighting typically involves positioning two light sources, one above and one below the subject’s face, creating a “clamshell” effect. This setup reduces shadows, especially under the eyes and chin. Adding a reflector underneath can serve a similar purpose—it bounces light back up to fill in shadows. In essence, using a reflector below is a way to achieve a clamshell-like effect without using a second light source. Clamshell lighting can be achieved with two soft sources or a combination of a soft source above and a reflector below.

Beauty Dish Lighting:
Beauty dishes can indeed provide a mix of soft and hard light. The quality of light depends on factors like the size of the beauty dish, the distance from the subject, and any modifiers like a diffusion sock. While a beauty dish can produce softer light compared to a bare strobe, it often gives a more pronounced transition from highlights to shadows compared to larger, softer modifiers like umbrellas or softboxes. The shot of Ms. Hepburn you mentioned likely used the beauty dish for its ability to sculpt the face and emphasize features.

Grids:
Sarah Edmonson’s statement is correct to some extent. The quality of light refers to how hard or soft it is, and grids themselves don’t alter this. However, they do control the spread of light, which affects the direction and focus. When you add a grid to a light source, it narrows the beam of light, making it more directional and focused. This can create more defined and “harder” shadows. So, while the quality of the light remains essentially the same, the grid influences its direction and the character of the shadows.

It’s crucial to experiment and see the effects firsthand. Try different setups, modify your light, and observe the results. Photography is both an art and a science; your interpretation and use of these tools will develop as you gain more hands-on experience. Don’t hesitate to keep exploring and asking questions!

Comment on Butterfly Lighting: 13 Best Techniques, Examples & Setups by Bruce https://shotkit.com/butterfly-lighting/#comment-198546 Sun, 10 Dec 2023 02:46:05 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=111584#comment-198546 Relatively new to photography, and very new to controlling light with strobe. In fact, I just purchased my first strobe, trigger, and modifier (stand, reflector, and mannequin to follow). Appreciate the diagram and review, but a few things have me a bit perplexed. I’ll start with the simple one first: 1. By adding a reflector underneath (or second fill light source) – how does this differ from “Clamshell” lighting? 2. If I read this article correctly, you say that a beauty dish gives “soft light”, and I realize it depends on the distance and diffusion material used (i.e. a sock), but I thought the light to shadow transitions with a beauty dish were a bit on the hard side (shot of Ms. Hepburn) under the chin and nose. 3rd (and last) I believe you said that adding a grid to create more controlled “hard” light. Last night I watched a YouTube video sponsored by B&H and GODOX by their ambassador Sarah Edmonson who said “grids do not change the quality of the light, just it’s direction”. I’m sure you can see how a new photographer, reading and watching all this for the first time, can get confused. Can you help?
