Fitting all of the gear I have used on my living room floor is impossible! My current shoots range from natural photojournalistic magic-hour sessions to big budget productions that involve every ounce of gear I can get my hands on. When only the best will do for the big shoots, I call upon Lance at Digital Transitions in NYC to rent a Phase One 50+mp medium format system with some Profoto lights. What you’re seeing above is my usual minimal travel kit that (mostly) fits in my LowePro X200 bag.
A big reason I chose the LowePro X200 is that it qualifies as carry-on luggage, it’s versatility, and of course the build quality. In the bag I squeeze in the Canon 5DMKIII, along with L lenses that range from 16mm to 200mm; Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 50mm f/1.2L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L.
I admit the Canon 50mm f/1.2L is the most fun, but the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L is by far the most used and abused. As an avid car photographer, circular polarizers and ND filters are crucial for controlling reflections and motion.
Clients love seeing instant images during a shoot, so when using the Canon camera, I use CamRanger for tethering to my iPad. But when using a Phase One, I tether to my more robust MacBook Pro that fits snugly into my handmade 74street leather bag. I admit I feel like Indiana Jones (pre-aliens) when carrying that beautiful rugged bag around.
Most of the gear is pretty explanatory like the PocketWizard wireless triggers, Westcott reflector, various cords, Canon 580ex speedlight, and Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod with 3030 head. But again, if anything extra is needed beyond my trusty inexpensive AlienBees lights, I break out the plastic and rent whatever the unique job calls for.
Did I mention I use a little bit of photoshop? That easily fits on my living room floor, but the dog can’t eat that… right?
